I inherited two old brown suitcases full of my great grandfather’s photographs, these were the prints disregarded by the public collections my great aunt had bequeathed the collection too. At the time I was studying fine art photography so the historical context of his photographic technique was of significance.

 Unfortunately, they had been mounted with heavy glue surrounded by some crappy cardboard window mounts and the actual prints became foxed and generally unstable.  Conversations with my peers about these prints spoke of conservation and archive. I don’t think I ever really ‘looked’ at the actual images.  Now I find them familiar and nostalgic, especially with the onslaught of the digital image.  I first travelled to India in 2002 and was surprised at how familiar it felt. I now have several strong creative connections in India through professional collaboration. I love the conversation these images carry.  Colonial and cultural histories.
